Dog Training Questions and/or Advice

I've been getting calls and emails asking for training advice and tips for common behaviors seen in our dogs. While I encourage everyone to implement a training program into their everyday lives so you can bring forth your dog's full potential, I understand that not everyone has the means of doing so. Even though every dog is different in personality and energy level, and the training approach varies depending on the dog, I'm going to open this blog to anyone who would like to post their training concerns. With the information being put out here, I can send people this direction to read about a question that has already been targeted. So, on that note, feel free to post any training or behavior modification questions to this blog and I'll be checking in periodically to give appropriate feedback.

Casey,

My great dane has grown to the point that he can reach our table and counters easily. He's normally very well behaved since spending his two weeks with you, but the temptation of a quick snack off of a plate in the sink or a partially eaten muffin my daughter left on our table can just be too much for him.

How can I break him of the habit of looking for snacks on our counters?

Chuck, you have the luxury of having a dog that understands the remote collar and how we are communicating with them through the use if it(Chuck is a client from 2007). I'd approach this issue one of two ways:
1) Let your great dane know that this is simply not tolerated through use of your "off" command.
2) Set up a "Stake out" so to speak and catch him in the act while he thinks you cannot see him.
Where as using the "off" command keeps you consistant with using the collar as a motivational tool, the latter of the two uses the collar as more of a correctional tool. Either way you choose, your giant puppy shouldn't care to sneak the quick snack that's in his reach! Keep me posted...

My dog, Max, barks uncontrolably at me, my husband, dogs being walked in front of our house, snaps when being corrected for that or jumping on table or counter. We got Max over 6 years now, and have since added 2 babies to the family, this, plus my new job may have added to our problem. We both work 40 plus hours a week and are feeling short on time and stressed enough without the dog problems... any suggestions!
